Nicholas Warns – Inspecting Architect for Mutford, Church of St Andrew

Published on 17th May 2019

Nicholas Warns has recently been appointed as the Inspecting Architect for Mutford, Church of St Andrew – For the Diocese of Norwich.

The quinquennial inspection was carried out in May 2019.

Mutford has the tallest round tower in Suffolk and the Galilee porch on the west face of the round tower is reported to be unique. Although round flint towers are not uncommon in Norfolk and Suffolk, they are very rare elsewhere in the country.

In Pevsner’s Buildings of England, Bill Wilson reports that the Galilee porch was restored by the well respected architect William Weir over the period 1927 -1936, and the detailing of the porch roof timbers is typical of his work.

Below are a selection of photographs taken by Nicholas Warns this including a photo using our thermal imaging camera.
